Oxidation Removal FAQs

  • Oxidation is a chemical reaction that causes a boat’s gelcoat or paint to fade, chalk, and lose its gloss. It’s common in boats exposed to sun, salt, and air over time, especially in coastal environments.

  • If your boat looks dull, chalky, or faded, especially along the hull or topside, it likely has surface oxidation. Severe oxidation may appear patchy or stained and won't improve with simple washing.

  • While oxidation can’t be prevented forever, professional boat detailing can fully remove surface oxidation and restore shine. Protective coatings like wax or ceramic help delay future oxidation.

  • Polishing enhances the shine of a clean surface, but oxidation removal uses abrasive compounds and buffers to eliminate dull, oxidized layers before polishing can be effective.

  • Mild oxidation should be treated as soon as it’s noticed to prevent deeper damage. We recommend a professional oxidation removal service at least once a year, or more often in high-exposure environments.

  • Yes—when done by professionals. At Horizon Marine Care, we use marine-safe, gelcoat-specific products and tools that safely restore your boat’s surface without causing harm.
